Read was significantly influenced by the ideas of Max Stirner. He was deeply impressed by Stirner’s defence of a rigorous individualist conception of freedom.

Hulme, who was killed in the First World War, Read was exposed to a distinctive modernist case which emphasized the aesthetics of rational geometric form. The ideas of Hulme were at the heart of the English avant-garde of the early twentieth century and an important influence on Read’s contemporaries Wyndham Lewis, Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot. Read was deeply influenced by Hulme’s praise for abstraction in art as the creation of harmony, and escape from chaos, in the depiction of something essential.

As a partner at Routledge he was influential in the development of its publishing identity. In 1952 he was knighted for services to literature and later in his career he was a trustee at the Tate Gallery. Read was also a published poet and novelist, a key signatory of the anti-militarist, anti-nuclear Committee of 100, and one of the first critics to use psychoanalytical methods. Read not only cultivated an audience in Britain for European and American modern art before and after the Second World War, but strived to conceptualize British contributions to modernism as dynamic developments of native cultural tradition.
